So, what is Social Media and why do I need it?

Social Media is a way of communicating with people over the internet using social networks and other online tools. Think about a group of friends. They share information about their experiences with each other, whether it is good or bad.

Social media works in the same way, but on the internet. Using social networks like Facebook and WordPress, people can communicate to a much broader audience.

Social media also allows for interaction. Traditional marketing and advertising is one-sided, meaning businesses can announce their products and services, but rarely get any direct interaction. Using social media to market your business can be an effective way to gauge how the message is being perceived.

How do I get started?

Signing up for the various social network website is straightforward, however, using those sites, in conjunction with each other, can be a bit daunting at first.

We suggest that you start with Facebook, Twitter and a blog host, like WordPress.

You can also add applications, join groups and causes, and for businesses, build a business page. Try to use the 95/5 rule. 95 percent of your posts should be engaging and not sales oriented. Although the benefits of utilizing social media are great, it seems like it can be quite an investment in time. To save time and make it easier, we use a great service called Hootsuite. Hootsuite allows you to update multiple social networking sites from one interface, tie those together, and schedule posts.

You may want to schedule time each week to update your social media posts and blogs, and schedule those posts to go out in the future.

Social Media is a great tool for reaching potential clients, and once you master the basic skills of social networking, you can use more advanced strategies for optimizing your social media experience.
